Minorities and Education-Read and Share

A. FIRST: Read the article assigned to you and make notes to summarize the important points. Be sure to include supporting evidence.

  1. US Education still separate and unequal
  2. Unequal opportunity: Race and Education
  3. Minorities labeled Learning Disabled
  4. Ethnic Minorities in Education
  5. The race gap in higher education is real
  6. Minority Education in the US: School to Prison Pipeline
  7. Barriers to mobility & job opportunities

B. SECOND: Find the other person (if there is one) who has the same article and compare notes to create a clear and complete summary.

C. NEXT: Evaluate the story

  1. What cultural perspectives are represented?
  2. What particular bias(es) are evident in the article? How do you know?
  3. Looking at the publication date, how recent is the report?
  4. Have things changed or stayed essentially the same? Find more recent evidence to support your conclusion.
  5. How does the more recent evidence demonstrate that there has, or has not been a change? In what way(s) is this a good thing? A bad thing?
  6. Who / What is the source? To what extent is it reliable?
  7. To what extent could the source have a particular political goal? What might it be?

D. FINALLY: Prepare a 10-15 minute presentation in which you summarize the article and present your findings of the above questions.

You will need to have prepared, written notes (on paper–not computer) to use in your presentation. There should be no full sentences and definitely no paragraphs. Notes should be bullet points or flash cards with one point per card.

Powerpoint is NOT required, but if you plan to use one, follow these guidelines:

This will be an official formal report. For a guide of what to include and how to word it, see Unit 6.8 on pp 320-321.

You will have the first day to read, create your own notes and collaborate with your partner.

The next class lesson, you will have time to create your presentation

MAKE SURE THAT BOTH PARTNERS (if there is one) HAVE A FULL COPY OF THE PRESENTATION. IF YOU NEED TO USE THE TEACHER´S COMPUTER FOR THE PRESENTATION, IT MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE TEACHER, 24 HOURS BEFORE THE PRESENTATION DATE.

The following lesson, presentations will be done. If your partner is absent, you will still present for your grade, and your partner will have to complete a different assignment for his / her grade.
